Unlocking the Potential of Genomic Data for Canada’s Future
About the Pan-Canadian Genome Library (PCGL)
Canada is in an ideal position to capitalize on the opportunities afforded by big genomic data.
We have world-leading expertise in genomics and in the development of data sharing policies and tools, however, we currently lack a national strategy to capture, store and access Canadian data in an equitable, secure and sustainable manner all while the size and complexity of human genomics datasets and their associated clinical data are growing rapidly.
Funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and led by a dream team of Canadian geneticists, the Pan-Canadian Genome Library (PCGL) will establish the framework for Canada’s management and sharing of human genomic data.
Why a Pan-Canadian Framework for genomic data?
A unified approach is paramount to prevent redundancy across existing National Genomic Data Generation Projects.
The PCGL endeavors to establish a federated data management system that adheres to international standards while respecting jurisdictional and cultural nuances in the movement of human genetic data.

“This investment in the Pan-Canadian Genome Library is an exciting step for our country as a leader in genomic research. Our government is proud to support this project and the cutting-edge research it will help—because when we invest in research, we are investing in better health outcomes for Canadians.”
The Honorable Mark Holland
Minister of Health
Goals of the PCGL
The PCGL builds upon Canadian-made foundational components and datasets and utilizes international standards to unify Canada’s human genome sequencing efforts and sets out a federated data management system that respects limitations on the jurisdictional movement of human genetic data.

For access and analysis of genomes sequenced in Canada to further research

To address equity, diversity and inclusion by capturing the Canadian genomic “variome”

To provide a key mechanism to improve effectiveness of healthcare delivery

To provide means and opportunities to facilitate clinical trials
