York University

Ian Stedman is an Associate Professor of Canadian Public Law & Governance and the graduate program director in the School of Public Policy and Administration within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. His research program is focused broadly on interrogating governance and accountability in the public sector and on bringing those theories and understandings to bear on the regulation of innovative and emerging technologies. Much of his recent work is related to the technologies and policies driving greater personalization in healthcare.

Prior to joining the School of Public Policy and Administration, he held the inaugural research Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence Law and Ethics at the Centre for Computational Medicine at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and then a post-doctoral fellowship at Dr. Rebecca Pillai Riddell’s O.U.C.H. Lab at York University, where he researched the Governance of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.

Ian’s experience as a former employee of Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner informs his work, as does his status as a rare disease patient, parent and advocate. He dedicate much of his time to raising awareness about the many challenges faced by those who live with chronic illnesses and trying to find ways to help improve the lives of others. As part of his work in the health space, he has launched and is Board Chair of the Canadian Autoinflammatory Network / Réseau Auto-inflammatoire Canadien, and has also been serving as a legal member of the Research Ethics Board at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) since 2016.
